These old instruments were crafted in the style of the old masters (Stradivarius, Guarneri and Amati) to facilitate the growth of orchestras in the early 20th Century.  Often, the labels contained in these violins will state the word 'Copy' as they were manufactured using measurements and moulds derived from the work of these early pioneers.
