Leon Mougenot Violin labelled 'Leon Mougenot Gauchè 1927' (OV25311)
Length of Back: 355mm
Leon Mougenot worked for Blanchard at Lyons, Jombar at Paris, and Hill and Sons at London. He established himself in Mirecourt in 1899 and had many pupils/apprentices.
This violin was made in his workshop from well selected tonewoods including evenly-grained spruce for the table and flamed maple for the back, neck and scroll. It features tasteful workmanship in particular for the scroll and the trademark Mougenot varnishing style of the back. Although not a long instrument, it feels quite masculine in the hand.
It plays with warmth and possesses a full, sonorous and sweet tone with great volume. Suitable for a committed classical student or Traditional fiddle player, this violin is in a mint-like condition in the familiar Mougenot Gauche varnished back. It is set up with Helicore Strings and wittner tailpiece.
